    Introduction

    Charlie joined Chambers as a tenant in October 2025, having successfully completed pupillage. He is developing a broad practice across all of Chambers’ specialist areas, including competition and regulatory law, public law and human rights, sports law, commercial law, data protection, VAT, and procurement.

    Charlie has a first-class History and Politics degree from the University of Oxford, where he won the Gibbs Prize (proxime accessit), ranking second in his year of over 250 students in Politics. He finished first in his cohort for both Civil and Criminal Litigation on the Bar Practice Course. Before joining Chambers, Charlie volunteered as a welfare benefits advocate, successfully appealing several cases in the First-Tier Tribunal. He also represented multiple claimants in the Employment Tribunal through the Free Representation Unit, including in a four-day disability discrimination case.

      Cases

      During pupillage, Charlie assisted on a range of competition law and regulatory matters, including:

      • Hammond v Amazon.com, Inc. & Others: collective proceedings claim alleging abuse of dominance through Amazon’s “Buy Box” algorithm.
      • Kent v Apple: £1.5 billion collective proceedings claim alleging abuse of dominance through excessive App Store commissions, the first Big Tech competition class action to reach trial in the UK
      • Cinven v CMA (Liothyronine) : an appeal against a £100m penalty imposed by the CMA for excessive and unfair pricing of liothyronine tablets.
      • Roberts v Severn Trent & Others: an opt-out claim brought on behalf of the customers of water companies relating to sewage spills.
      • Asda Stores Limited & Others v Bremnes Seashore AS & Others: a damages action alleging a cartel relating to farmed Atlantic salmon products
      • Global-365 & Another v Paypoint & Others: a claim alleging abuse of dominance in relation to pre-payment services to energy suppliers.
      • Trucks (Wave 2): the Second Wave of the Trucks litigation.
      • Yew Freight Trading Limited v Puro Ventures Limited: standalone claim concerning territorial restrictions in franchise agreements and access to justice for smaller companies in competition cases.
      • Eurospares v Porsche: application for an urgent interim injunction in the CAT.
      • ElectraLink v Perse: application for an urgent interim injunction in a constructive refusal to supply case
      • Various matters on an advisory basis, for both prospective claimants, defendants, and litigation funders in competition law actions.

      Regulatory Matters:

      • Advice on compliance with the Class Exemptions Electricity Order 2001.
      • Advice on EU Cosmetic Products Regulations.
      • Advice on the implications of introducing zonal pricing on A1P1 rights of generators and offtakers.
    • Public law & human rights

      Charlie accepts instructions in all areas of public law and human rights, both as sole and junior counsel.

      Prior to his career at the bar, Charlie gained experience in various areas of public law, including welfare benefits law (as a pro bono advocate), discrimination law (as an employment tribunal representative for the Free Representation Unit), and housing law (as a caseworker at Release supporting clients with drug dependencies).

      Charlie is a member of the Administrative Law Bar Association and the Human Rights Lawyers Association. He welcomes instructions from charities and NGOs, including on a pro bono basis.

      Cases

      • Charlie is currently acting pro bono in a welfare benefits case, concerning a gap in the PIP regulations affecting individuals who cannot safely take nutrition, with an Upper Tribunal hearing scheduled for November 2025 (led by Brendan McGurk KC).

      During pupillage, Charlie assisted on a wide range of matters concerning public law and human rights including:

      • A judicial review challenge to an NHS Trust’s decision to withdraw treatment to a child
      • Advice on merits and quantum for a false imprisonment claim against the Metropolitan Police.
      • Advising on the scope of Citizens’ Rights under the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement in the context of deportation.
      • Advice on whether legal professional privilege had been waived on legal advice given to a government department following reference in parliamentary debates.
      • Opinion on the A1P1 ECHR implications of proposed energy market reforms
    • Sport

      Charlie has a keen interest in all areas of sports law.

      Cases

      During pupillage, Charlie assisted on various sports matters, including:

      • Advice to a football league on the prospect of successfully challenging the structure of payments made to clubs.
      • Advice to a football league on the merits of a possible challenge to the governing body’s regulations.
    • Commercial

      Charlie accepts instructions in commercial matters. He has been instructed in multiple county court matters as sole counsel.

      Cases

      Charlie has successfully acted as sole counsel for British Airways in multiple claims brought against them in the County Court.

      During pupillage, Charlie assisted in a range of commercial matters, including:

      • Jinxin Inc v Aser Media Pte Ltd & Others: a commercial fraud case involving deceit and conspiracy claims arising from the acquisition of a sports media rights agency.
      • Advice on whether a clause in a settlement agreement would be held to be a penalty clause.
      • Advice on whether a subcontractor was entitled to additional consideration from the rise in employer NICs.
      • Advice on whether a challenge by a third-party beneficiary under a will gives rise to a ‘claim’ entitling recovery under professional indemnity insurance.
    • Privacy, information and data protection

      Charlie accepts instructions on privacy, information law and data protection matters, whether in the context of private claims, regulatory enforcement, judicial reviews or freedom of information.

      Cases

      Current and recent instructions include:

      • Acting for the ICO in appeals concerning the Environmental Information Regulations 2004, including drafting responses to tribunal appeals.
      • Advising the ICO on the territorial scope of the “course of justice” exception under regulation 12(5)(b) of the EIR 2004
    • VAT

      Charlie accepts instructions in VAT matters.

      Cases

      During pupillage, Charlie assisted on various VAT matters, including:

      • Morrisons’ appeal to the FTT on HMRC’s decision to classify cool-down rotisserie chickens as standard-rated.
      • Research tasks for Melanie Hall KC.
    • Public procurement

      Charlie accepts instructions for challengers and contracting authorities in procurement litigation and on an advisory basis

      Cases

      During pupillage, Charlie assisted on various procurement matters, including advice relating to cross-border utilities contracts and advice to a contracting authority on whether they fell within the scope of the Procurement Act 2023.
