Alastair accepts instructions in all areas of public & administrative law and human rights, both as sole and junior counsel.
Prior to his career at the bar, Alastair worked as the Political Adviser to a senior parliamentarian. He has a comprehensive understanding of the legislative process, as well as extensive experience of approaching public law issues from a policy perspective. He has drafted bills and amendments which were subsequently enacted into law. He has a particular interest in EU citizens’ rights issues, having worked on the subject during the passage of Brexit legislation through Parliament.
Alastair has a keen interest in all aspects of housing law. Alongside his legal training, he worked for Safer Renting, a tenant support service. He assisted clients facing illegal eviction, possession hearings, homelessness or pursuing Rent Repayment Orders in the First Tier Tribunal.
Alastair is a member of the UK Attorney General’s Junior Junior Scheme, the Administrative Law Bar Association and the Human Rights Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Environmental Rights Recognition Project.
Alastair welcomes instructions from charities and NGOs, including on a pro bono basis.

Recent instructions include:
- CJC v Secretary of State for Defence, a human rights challenge relating to the investigative obligation under Article 2 ECHR (led by Daniel Beard KC).
- (AD&MTD) v LB Redbridge, a judicial review claim brought on behalf of a disabled child and his parent relating to breaches of Convention rights, the Equality Act, the Housing Act 1996 and the Children Acts 1989 and 2004 (led by Ian Wise KC).
- C16 v Secretary of State for the Home Department, SIAC appeal proceedings challenging the Home Secretary’s decision, taken on national security grounds, to deprive the appellant of their citizenship (led by Charlotte Kilroy KC).
- C16 v Special Immigration Appeals Commission, judicial review proceedings relating to a SIAC deprivation of citizenship appeal on fairness and natural justice grounds (led by Charlotte Kilroy KC).
During pupillage, Alastair assisted on a wide range of public law and human rights cases, including:
- R (Kent County Council) v SSHD, relating to the accommodation of unaccompanied children arriving in the UK on small boats (assisting Azeem Suterwalla KC).
- R (SB & Another) v Newham, concerning the interaction of the Care Act 2014 and the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, and the provision of accommodation to asylum seekers with eligible care needs (assisting Azeem Suterwalla KC).
- Multiple judicial review claims brought by Afghan nationals who worked alongside the British Army in Afghanistan but were refused relocation to the UK under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy.
- An appeal under the Housing Act 1996 challenging a local authority’s decision that the claimant had made themselves intentionally homeless.
- A range of advisory work for government and other public bodies.
