Kyle welcomes instructions across the range of Chambers’ competition and regulatory work. He previously spent six months as a trainee solicitor in the Competition, Regulation and Trade team at Herbert Smith Freehills.

During pupillage, Kyle gained experience of a number of UK and EU competition and regulatory matters, including:

• Consumers’ Association (‘Which?’) v Apple: collective proceedings alleging abuse of dominance relating to iCloud storage.
• Elizabeth Helen Coll & others v Alphabet & others: collective proceedings concerning the commission charged on purchases made through the Google Play Store.
• Intel Corporation v European Commission: appeal concerning the fine re-imposed upon Intel by the Commission in relation to conduct in the microprocessor market.
• Rowntree v The Performing Right Society & PRS for Music: collective proceedings concerning the distribution of unmatched royalties as between songwriter and publisher members.
• Meta Platforms v European Commission: Meta’s action before the General Court regarding the Commission’s decision that its ‘Consent or Pay’ model did not comply with the Digital Markets Act.
• Advising a regulator on the imposition of administrative penalties following the exercise of a warrant to inspect premises.

Kyle is developing a broad public law practice. He welcomes pro bono instructions, including from charities and NGOs. Kyle completed a six-month secondment to the Legal team at Liberty as a trainee solicitor, and has volunteered for the Prisoners’ Advice Service, the Black Equity Organisation and the School Exclusion Project.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Kyle practised as a solicitor in the Public Law and Regulatory team of Herbert Smith Freehills, where he represented clients in a range of commercial judicial reviews, public inquiries, interactions with regulators, pro bono interventions and human rights matters.

• Human rights: assisting with an application brought under Article 8 in the European Court of Human Rights concerning alleged secret surveillance.
• Public law: advising on the application of the Online Safety Act 2023 to online advertising.

During pupillage, Kyle gained experience of a wide range of public law and human rights matters, including:

• An appeal to the Court of Appeal regarding whether a writ of habeas corpus is available to a person subject to immigration bail conditions.
• Advising a government department on the human rights considerations arising from retrospective legislation.
• Advising on the merits of issuing a homelessness challenge against a local authority.
• Advising on the merits of a claim for damages against a public authority for delays in processing an application for a licence.

As a Judicial Assistant, Kyle worked on a range of public law cases, including:

• R (Al-Haq) v Secretary of State for Business and Trade [2025] EWHC 1615 (Admin) (Divisional Court): challenge to the exclusion of F-35 jet components from the suspension of export licences for military equipment to Israel.
• R (Nobel Oil E&P North Sea Limited) v The Oil and Gas Authority t/a The North Sea Transition Authority [2025] EWHC 2139 (Admin) (Divisional Court): challenge to advice given in relation to the decommissioning of the Gryphon Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel.
• D8 v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2025] EWCA Civ 33: revocation of refugee status on national security grounds and the scope of Article 33(2) of the Refugee Convention.

Kyle welcomes instructions in information and data protection law, whether in the context of regulatory enforcement, private claims, judicial review or freedom of information. As a solicitor at Herbert Smith Freehills, Kyle advised both private bodies on the making of freedom of information requests and public authorities on responding to them.

• Advising on potential lawful bases for the processing of children’s personal data under the GDPR.

During pupillage, Kyle gained experience of the following VAT matters:

• Advising on whether supplies of cosmetic surgery were exempt from VAT.
• Advising on the application of the lottery exemption to VAT.

As Judicial Assistant in the Court of Appeal, Kyle encountered HMRC v Innovative Bites [2025] EWCA Civ 293 concerning the tax treatment of marshmallows. 

Kyle has a particular interest in sports law.

• As a pupil, Kyle assisted with proceedings concerning competition and contractual claims brought in relation to the establishment of a new sports league.

Kyle welcomes instructions from challengers and contracting authorities, in litigation and on an advisory basis.

• Advising on the application of the Procurement Act 2023 to a private company, including the relationship of the Act to the position under previous domestic and EU public procurement legislation.

Kyle welcomes instructions in commercial law. As Judicial Assistant to Lord Justice Males, Kyle encountered a number of commercial law appeals, including:

• International Entertainment Holdings v Allianz Insurance [2024] EWCA Civ 1281: concerning the application of business interruption insurance cover in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
• Hulley Enterprises v The Russian Federation [2025] EWCA Civ 108: concerning whether transnational issue estoppel applies to the determination of an exception to state immunity, in the context of enforcement proceedings arising from the Yukos arbitration awards.
• The Czech Republic v Diag Human SE & Josef Stava [2025] EWCA Civ 588: challenges under the Arbitration Act 1996 to an investment treaty award.
